Feeling stressed? Slow down, sit down and allow yourself to calm down.
When we feel stressed and overwhelmed it can be hard to work out what you can do to support yourself. You may be feeling stressed cos you have a million and one things to do, and only a short amount of time to do them in. You may be feeling stressed because of dynamics in your personal or work relationships, as you try to work out how to manage situations within those relationships. Or you could even be working to cope with all of these things at once. Working to address your stress in a regular and proactive way can support your long-term sense of wellbeing and day to day engagement with your life.
In stressful and overwhelming times we can begin to feel that we have no space or time to manage all of these things. We can get lost in the overwhelm and struggle to know what to do to address how we are feeling and to cope with everything that is going on around us. Sometimes it can be helpful to create a really easy and straight forward strategy to support yourself. Here are some simple steps that you can use to support yourself next time you feel you are in overwhelm or feeling completely stressed out.
Firstly know your own signs that you are stressed. What are your own signs? Do you feel constantly tired, do you constantly feel like you have no time for yourself, do you feel that you never have enough time to do all the things you need to do. Do you get snappy and irritable? All of these things can be potential signs that we are getting to a point of being stressed out or overwhelmed with things.
Secondly allow yourself to slow down. Proactively think about what you can do in your day to day routine to allow yourself more time, drop the non-essentials from your day, postpone them or move them to a day in the future. Don’t beat yourself up for not getting everything done in a day. We are only human. Be forgiving of yourself and remind yourself that you are doing your best.
Thirdly allow yourself to sit down. Literally sit down and give yourself 10-15 mins of doing nothing other than sitting and resting your body. Find a calm space, allow your body to unwind, feel your body’s tension points, and focus on letting those tension points relax. Allow yourself to release the stress in your body. Take slow deep breathes, unwind your body, clear you mind and allow yourself to be still for those 10-15 mins.
And finally, tell yourself that it is ok to calm down. Tell yourself that everything is a process, nothing can be rushed, that things will get done, and all in good time. Don’t put too much pressure on yourself, remind yourself you are doing your best and that you will get things done gradually and over time. Most importantly if you feel you need help, Don’t be hesitant about asking for it, it is absolutely ok to get support for yourself.
