The Beauty of Simplicity and its Connection to Soul

I was always curious about the phrase “just keep it simple” and the phrase “don’t overthink it” two things that in the past felt very foreign to me. As an introvert, I did a lot of thinking about many different things all day every day. What I noticed with this was that at some point, I needed to stop that thinking and pause. I was stuck as to how to address this and find a different way to navigate my thoughts and that tendency to always be in my head. Until one day I heard someone say, “Look don’t overthink it, keep it simple, all you need to know is what your next step will be”. This was a little golden nugget of wisdom that landed on my lap, and I ran with it. It was like a light bulb got switched on in my head. And in that moment, I decided to practice keeping things simple, focusing on just the next step, and not projecting too far into the future.

What I learned from my process was this. Simplicity is an opportunity to clear your mind, reset, get grounded become more present and be more in the here and now. The beauty of simplicity is that it is a state of mind whose focus is to keep things uncomplicated, where it focuses on one thing at a time, which creates that opportunity to clear your mind and make space for new ideas, new observations and new internal and external awareness.

There is a natural human tendency to look to the past in our head or look to the future and to analyse these periods over and over. This can rob us of that head space and time that simplicity and being present in the here and now offers.

Keeping things simple from my perspective includes staying in the here and now, and letting go of any analytical thinking about the past or the future. Yes, it helps to have a guide or plan of where you are working to get to in life, but let it be just that, a guide. Remembering that nothing is written in stone is key. Allowing flexibility and simplicity to exist in your day-to-day dealings can make a big difference to how you experience your day. Allow yourself to exist in the present, see what you notice about yourself, and your surroundings and what ideas and inspirations start to come to you.

Remember that the less headspace we can give to thinking about the past or the future, the more headspace we free up to allow new thoughts and senses of things in. And that is where the magic and beauty is. That is when we truly start to process who we are and what we are genuinely about. The present is a gift. And keeping things simple will facilitate the beauty of this gift for you.

So how do we keep things simple, the first step in the process from my experience is to get out of your overthinking. Try not to overthink things. Let go of the past and resist fortune-telling the future. You can get out of overthinking by regularly grounding yourself in the here and now. This can be done by focusing on something concrete in the present. It could be a cup you are holding, and focusing on that. It could be paying attention to what your senses are telling you, what you smell, hear or see in your surroundings. All these activities help me to keep myself in the present, and aware of what is happening around me. What is also helpful to help clear your head is to do some journaling, write down all those thoughts that keep going around in your head, do some meditation, be intentional about which form of meditation you use, and then when done, let go of any expectations of your day and instead be curious. Put your focus outwards, rather than inwards to old thoughts of the past or future. Let all of those go.

Additionally, allowing ourselves to be in the present and keeping things simple can make time for us to become more aware of what we are feeling, this is a good thing. I’m a firm believer in the importance of holding space for our emotional states daily. If we are too busy, with too much on our minds, and too many things on our to-do lists, we can avoid those feelings that might be bubbling under the surface. By keeping things simple we can connect more with our emotional side, learn from those feelings and what they tell us about ourselves and what is important to us.  Maybe you could begin to identify one key aspect of yourself you would like to be mindful of as you go through your day. It helps to keep things simple by identifying just one or two things to focus on daily.

Simplicity and the act of keeping things simple might be scoffed at or frowned upon, and yet it is the key to being more present in your day and your life, as well as a valuable process which allows you to connect more with your emotions and get to know yourself on a much deeper level if you are willing.

Pivotal for me was the fact that over time practising that state of simplicity enabled me to nurture a stronger connection to my inner wisdom and to be more able to listen to my intuition, deeper knowing’s and connect more with my inner spiritual world.
